Children and young people
We believe they are the Church of today, not simply the Church of tomorrow.
Children and young people are valued and nurtured at St Mary’s and are encouraged to take an active part in the life of the church. They are fully involved in our worship: singing, serving at the altar, reading scripture and leading prayers.
On a Sunday morning
The 10am mass is always busy and lively, usually with baptisms on the first Sunday of the month. Children of all ages are welcome to be part of the service. Feel free to move around the building during the service, or pop out and come in again — we want everyone to feel relaxed and welcome.
- The children’s corner, for under 8s — a safe, carpeted space in the church itself. It is always there, every single week, and needs nobody to be running anything.
- Children’s Church, for ages 5 to 11, meets in the Crypt Room for worship, singing and fun activities.
- Youth Church, for 11 to 18 year olds, meets in the Sacristy for discussion based on the Gospel reading, followed by age-appropriate activities.
All children return to the main body of the church in time for Communion.
Children and young people are always welcome, every week, whatever else is on. The children’s corner is always open. Children’s Church and Youth Church do not run every Sunday, so if you are coming especially for one of those it is worth checking first — but you never need to check before bringing a child to church.
First Communion and confirmation
Children aged 9 and over who regularly attend mass with their families are prepared for their First Communion each spring, and enjoy a trip to Southwark Cathedral to learn about the wider Church family. Confirmation is then offered for those aged 14 or over, receiving the Chrism of the Holy Spirit.

Keeping children safe
St Mary’s follows the safeguarding policy and practice guidance of the Church of England and the Diocese of Southwark. Everyone working with children here is recruited, trained and checked accordingly. See our safeguarding page.
