Mothers’ Union

The Mothers’ Union is an international Christian charity which supports families worldwide. Despite the name its membership has never been only mothers: parents, men, widows and single people are all part of it, here and everywhere else.

There has been a branch at St Mary’s since 1895. It is a lively one, with members across a wide range of ages, and it has grown in the last few years.

What the branch does

The main work is supporting family life in all its forms. The branch looks after the Children’s Corner at the back of church and the families who use it, makes tiny garments for premature babies at the Evelina hospital, and knits hats for people sleeping rough.

It also raises money for work well beyond Lewisham: holidays for families who could not otherwise have one, literacy courses in Africa, support for the families of prisoners, and work with survivors of domestic abuse. School uniforms go to the branch’s link in Zimbabwe, and collections are made for young people in need in the borough.

When they meet

The monthly evening meeting takes a different topic each time. Two daytime groups meet once a month as well — craft and company, and a gentler way in for anybody who would rather start there than at an evening meeting.

Joining

Everybody is eligible — single or married, male or female, parent or not. The branch would be glad of your company at any of its meetings before you decide anything.
